Imposter Syndrome in Recovery
A lot of people don’t talk about this, but it’s common — feeling like a fraud in recovery. Like you don’t really belong, like you haven’t earned your seat, like everyone else has something you’re missing. You show up, you stay sober, you do the work… and still there’s a voice that says, “Who do you think you are?”
Today on The Daily Trudge, we talk about imposter syndrome in recovery — that quiet feeling that you’re pretending, getting away with something, or waiting to be exposed. This doesn’t just hit newcomers. It shows up after time sober, after growth, after service, and sometimes right when things are actually going well.
We’ll talk about where this comes from — shame, comparison, old identities, and the belief that recovery is something you have to qualify for instead of something you live. We’ll also talk about why imposter syndrome isn’t proof you’re doing it wrong — it’s often proof that you’re growing beyond who you used to be.
Recovery doesn’t require credentials. It requires honesty. You don’t need to feel confident to belong. You don’t need to feel “spiritual enough” or “fixed enough” to be useful. Showing up counts — even when your head tells you it doesn’t.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re faking it, waiting to be found out, or unsure whether you really belong here — you’re not alone. And you’re not an imposter.
